PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This 8-course bundle is jam packed with courses to help build a strong foundation in common orthopedic concerns in Primary Care! This bundle covers orthopedic pharmacology, fractures, osteoporosis, spine imaging, and pediatric sports injuries. Evaluation and management of orthopedic injuries to the hands, wrists, elbows, knees and joints are also addressed, with an added bonus on the latest updates for Osteoporosis.

This bundle is hosted on the site of our educational partner, NPACE. After you purchase the bundle, you will immediately receive a confirmation email from APEA's CE Center with instructions on how to access your purchase. You will be required to create an account on NPACE.org.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS The Other Silent Disease: Osteoporosis
This session will focus on identification of the at risk patient for osteoporosis. Most recent treatments will be discussed in detail.
Top 5 Most Common Fractures
This session will evaluate the top 5 most common fractures encountered by ER, UC, and primary care settings. Topics include evaluation and management of these injuries as well as possible red flags that can occur.
Everything I Wanted to Know About Advanced Imaging of the Spine
This session will discuss the use of various spinal imaging. Topics include review of routine imaging with an emphasis on CT, MRI, and other advanced spinal imaging used in and outpatient. Numerous case studies with imaging of commonly encountered pathology will be discussed.
Needle Nonsense & Medication Management for Ambulatory Care Providers
This presentation will discuss when to use non-pharm methods to treat joint pain, and will also discuss medications as an option for pain control. Last but not least, injections will be discussed when all else has failed!

This program is an in-depth session to discuss the exam of the shoulder and knee joint. Multiple techniques are discussed and reviewed along with assessment skills and treatment options. The anatomy of the Shoulder and knee is reviewed in detail. Urgent vs non urgent diagnosis
Update on Osteoporosis and Fracture Prevention in Men and Women
This session will provide information regarding the identification of women and men at risk for fracture based on bone densitometry and their 10-year fracture risk using the FRAX calculation. Pharmacologic therapies will be reviewed including patient selection for first line therapies when fracture risk is high and therapies for patients at very high risk including drug risks and benefits. Current controversies will be discussed including long-term use of bisphosphonates, adverse events including osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) and atypical subtrocanteric femur fractures and drug holidays. New concerns about discontinuation of rank ligand inhibitors and the rapid increase in vertebral fractures will be discussed. Treatment of patients at high risk due to therapy such as aromatase inhibitors and androgen deprivation therapy will be presented. Case studies will be used to provide real clinical scenarios.

This session focuses on the evaluation and management of common upper extremity orthopedic complaints seen in the ambulatory care setting. Emphasis will be placed on the shoulder, elbow, and hand, with a review of key clinical findings and commonly used provocative tests. Instruction will be enhanced through the use of diagrams and video demonstrations, offering a practical approach to diagnosis and treatment.

FACULTY
Dr. Christopher Hemmer, DNP, ANP, ONP-C, FAANPANP, Piper Spine Care
Dr. Hemmer has been board certified as an adult nurse practitioner since 1999. He is also a board-certified orthopedic nurse practitioner and a fellow of the American Association of nurse practitioners. His area of specialty is in adult spinal disorders for the last 22 years. He currently evaluates new patients as well as established pre and post-operative patients. Chris has spent over nine years moonlighting in the emergency department in the past as well.
Dr. Hemmer started teaching as an adjunct for Saint Louis University in 2007. In the fall of 2013, Christopher accepted a full-time position with the school of nursing as an assistant professor for graduate students. He has co-taught several graduate-level courses over the years as well as performed as a guest lecturer during residency for the NP students. Chris has been receptive for several years to teaching in the clinical setting as a preceptor for NP students interested in spinal diseases and wanting to increase their radiology knowledge. Dr. Hemmer chairs a cadaveric CNE course yearly for spine specialists. Chris has presented various spine topics on the local, state, and national level over the years.
Dr. Hemmer research area is in vertebral compression fractures and osteoporosis. Specifically, the identification and management of fractures and osteoporosis in the adult population is a strong area of interest.
Nancy Berman, MSN, ANP-BC, NCMP, FAANP
Nancy R. Berman specializes in women’s healthcare at Michigan Healthcare Professionals, in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She has been a nurse practitioner since 1978 and holds certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner and as a Menopause Practitioner from the North American Menopause Society. She received her BSN from the University of Michigan and her MSN from Wayne State University. She has been a nurse colposcopist and expert in HPV and lower genital tract disease for over 35 years. She has authored many publications and educational materials and has lectured extensively on topics in lower genital tract disease, colposcopy, osteoporosis, menopause and women’s health.
She served on the board of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) from 2010 through 2016, served as Course Director of the ASCCP Comprehensive Colposcopy Course for a two-year term from 2017 to 2019 and served on the Michigan Cervical Cancer Consortium. She currently serves as a representative of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH) on the ASCCP Consensus Committee for the Enduring Guidelines for the Management of Abnormal Cervical Cancer Screening Tests and Cancer Precursors She was inducted as a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2015.
Karen Myrick, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ONP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, Associate Professor, University of Saint Joseph, Interdisciplinary Health and Science
Karen Myrick, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ONP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, is a nurse practitioner, educator, researcher, author, and leader in nursing education specializing in orthopedics, sports medicine, and advanced practice training. She practices at Orthopedic Associates of Hartford Urgent Care, providing expert musculoskeletal care.
Karen is the Director of Nursing Education and Practice at Springer Publishing, where she develops innovative learning resources, including the FNP and AGNP Video on Demand Review, to support NP students and practicing clinicians. She is also a full tenured professor at multiple universities and serves as Program Director for the Post-Master's Certificate Program in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital Orthopedic Academy. Additionally, she teaches at Plus One Defense Systems, integrating healthcare knowledge with self-defense training.
An author of multiple textbooks and a well-published researcher, Karen has received numerous grants and awards for her contributions to nursing and healthcare.
A Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), she is dedicated to advancing NP education, research, and clinical excellence.
